I like the idea of a northern Australia club based out of the NT and playing games in Darwin, Alice Springs and North Queensland.

But what about Canberra? This multi sports stadium proposal looks nice.

there will be no multi purpose stadium in Canberra
the ridiculous idea is being shredded by locals

Barr said the ACT can't afford to build a rectangular stadium .. not enough money , been saying this for 20 years

any suggestion that the ACT could now find ... 50% more .. money to build an inferior shit multi purpose stadium that pleases no one is beyond ridiculous
Barr is a twat , a fumbelball fan & he is on the way out with Canberrans having enough of him & his hypocrisy

a 30K seat indoor stadium for the 3 rectangular sports is the plan
& the only plan

plus the NRL & the Raiders have previously rejected the idea ..... emphatically

Albo & Vlandys are good mates
the NRL will get what it wants

Will absolutely not happen…complete crap reporting..other directors will not vote for it…because they may be next.
And it makes no money for the AFL…will not happen.
20th side, then 21, then 22 and then they will stop.

Need more players - WA not producing any next year they think - and whilst there are many players eniinating from QLD for no players to be coming from a heartland state is a concern.

AFL is maxed out for 'expansion'. They have nowhere else to go. They dominate Victoria, the desert states and little Tassy. They tried NZ and laughably China. Both joints punted 'em lololololol!!! Fumbling will not and can not get any bigger anywhere. No one outside the captured states wants the mess.

Rugby League on the other hand have multiple real expansion options. PNG - Albo wants to put a team there and help finance them for 'strategic' reasons lololoolol!!!!!

Another NZ team is also calling. The game is flying over there. Another team will be real expansion. NZ has been dominated by Union forever but RL is catching up. A team in Christchurch would be the way to go.

Plus the pacific islands are converting to the greatest game of all. And apparently Peter The Great is contemplating buying the pommie Super League and running it. How good would that be. The Great Man running both comps. If only The Big Dill had these options.

And my prediction for fumblings next team? Send the Ginats to Canberra. No one would notice the difference in western Sydney. Then put a team in Nauru. Apparently AFL is their national sport. All 12k of 'em lolololol.
They'd get better crowds than the Ginats I'd say.

Agree that rl has many options for expansion . The pros for AFL I believe is they have a strong presence across the nation whereas rl still lacks any major grassroots presence outside the traditional areas. I think this why the afl targeted western Sydney - as no presence hardly at all - and have failed miserably I think as this still appears the issue - however it was, and is, the last untapped major market. Canberra is the only real option for another team I feel however the Giants appear to have a better following there than in western Sydney - so yes- do they move the giants there ? I don’t think so - as re: point raised about the untapped market WS. I think the need to start afresh there - stop playing in Canberra (putting a team there would see to that), change the name to Sydney West or West Sydney’s (Wests) - focus locally more and give people a sense of the team being theirs. More local games- lots and lots of free tickets.

the AFL would rather LOSE 30million a year than pull the Giants..
and why they can afford it they will continue to do so..

Logistically AFL only have a few options of expansion

Bunbury / Busselton as 1 team
Darwin
Canberra

All small regional bases.

Canberra looks the winner

Canberra the obvious - but Newcastle is the next I would say - matches with Geelong as a regional area and has a good grass roots - more so than western Sydney did/hsve. Not sure where Bunbury ???? Darwin - two things going against it - small population. And already an Aussie rules town.

more chance of putting a team on Mars , then putting one in Newcastle

grass roots is irrelevant , soccer has 10 times the players in the Hunter as the drops & oopsies , & its sooker team is insolvent
the fumbles & derps is as popular in Newy as a grog fart in an elevator
a team there would be even less relevant then GWS is in Western Sydney , just won't work

team 20 will be Perth 3
there is almost no doubt about it either , it will be smaller then the other 2 WA sides ... but twice the size of any of these other ridiculous ideas being floated.

You see - all the reasons you mention as to not put a team in Newcastle are the very reasons I think they should. So we at least agree that AFL is not popular and it is a potential growth area - one of a few limited ones available to the AFL at that.

There is no way Perth would have a second team - 1. No new market to tap. 2. too small. If they were going to go to an already established AFL heartland (which I think would be stupid) it would be Adelaide. (Norwood). If the AFL are serious about growing the game however, they need to either go to Canberra and build on the strong Aussie Rules following already there, or a regional area where there is a need to grow the game that has a decent market size. I think Newcastle fits this nicely for the AFL. Hopefully they learn the mistakes of GWS - but at least Newcastle can be seen as an identified region unlike the oblique Greater Western Sydney which no one really feels taps into a sense of a local community. That's my view anyway.

the afl would have learnt its lesson , its mistake .. from putting a team in an area that has no interest in it ... none in GWS.
I hope they make the same mistake again & put a team in Newy that will drag on their finances even more then GWS, but.... they won't

Perth will have 2.5 Million people by 2035 ( double the size of Sadelaide) , more then big enough for 3 teams

The following for the drops & fumbles in Canberra is hardly strong
over the 12 years of coming to Canberra GWS have averaged about 10,000 a game & thats for a team that has performed very well , better support then western sydney , but thats not saying much.

TV ratings are also poor

a full time team in Canberra is not going to happen
its Perth , & thats because a team there will not fail like other options that certainly will
