IS this the start of a true rivalry??

Well today's the day when the Swans meet the Giants in a qualifying final - up until now there hasn't been the sort of rivalry that comes with traditional combatants, like Carlton v Collingwood, Sth Sydney v St.George, All Blacks v Wallabys, NSW v QLD (SOO). But you can't just artificially create rivalry, it comes from desperate struggles where the winner basks in glory and the loser is left to ponder what could have been, where the stakes are high and losing carries with it agony of regret, like a grand final or a final. Something that up until now was lacking between the Swans and the Giants. No one could now argue about the courage and foresight of the AFL to properly set up the Giants. Record memberships for the Swans (56k which in IMO can not only be attributed to their success and Franklin but also AFL more prominent in the media) and Giants (16 k) record levels of sponsorship and big crowds (Swans average 33425 highest since 2007, 4th highest of all time), (Giants 12333 highest average on record by 2k). how great is the rivalry! over time it will grow in to the intercity rivalry, like the crows & power as well as eagles & dockers have. all the shit fights between fans as well will be great to see & stir several of the league numptys up thats for sure
not sure how far the giants will go this year, but it will go along way to slowly growing their fans base
the swans just continue to grow in popularity easily out dwarfing the NRL teams

Without compounding the tendancy of every thread about the swans reverting to the same and ongoing comments re cola i would still like to know what would you think would be adequate to address the disadvanatages that the swans, giants, suns and lions face? Because without anything it would be an unfair comp with the pendulum swung far too far the other way.

You can help non heartland clubs off field to give them every chance to be successful ..
On field they should have no advantages over other teams .

It's not rocket science
As soon as one team gets on field advantages that others don't it compromises the comp.

So could you list the off feild assistance that would stop say players leaving after there initial contract ends. I use this as an example as it is a major problem for non traditional states. The suns for instance have not retianed any first round picks i believe from their initial draft. You will never stop this in full but it is a major concern. You need something but agree the cola was too much but was is it? If there is an off feild thing you think would address this disadvantage i would be all ears.
