AFL in league of their own at spotting talent

JAKE BARRETT has league blood coursing through his veins. His cousin Trent Barrett won a Dally M Medal. His uncles were Peter and Mark Stimson, who played at club level in the 1990s.
''It's a league family, that's all they really watch,'' Jake, 15, said.
Yet the boy from Temora has turned his back on the game to play AFL. It is a propaganda victory for the code, which has already created headlines by recruiting high-profile league players such as Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt.
However, it is Jake's generation that the AFL wants to win over in NSW. It has ambitious plans to grow the proportion of players from NSW and the ACT on club lists to 10 per cent from 4.5 per cent within the next five to 10 years. That would mean more than doubling this year's number of 36 to about 84.
The AFL boss, Andrew Demetriou, still faces a long road ahead in spreading the gospel north of the Murray, but with its coffers overflowing with funds after signing a $1.25 billion TV rights deal earlier this year, the AFL can now tip even more money into its NSW and Queensland junior programs to strengthen the game outside of its heartland.
The general manager of Sydney Roosters' recruitment, Peter O'Sullivan, said the AFL was better placed than the NRL to identify talent. ''They've got a lot more people on the ground than league.''
Jake has spent the past three weeks representing the NSW/ACT Rams in the AFL's national under-16 championships under the watch of Geelong's two-time premiership captain Tom Harley.
He aspires to play for Sydney or Greater Western Sydney and will be eligible for the 2013 draft.
Already part of the Giants' academy program, Jake can progress from the under 16s to the under 18s level, which forms the hunting ground for AFL recruiters. If he is one of the 80 or so such players drafted each year, he stands to earn a minimum $66,900 plus match payments of $2900 a game. ''There's an actual tangible visible career path there,'' said Harley.
There is little chance of Jake going back to his former code. ''It's a great pathway coming down the AFL because there's so many opportunities to choose from,'' he said. ''With rugby league, I just wasn't feeling it.''

That's precisely why the NRL, the clubs, RL journos and fans are so paranoid. They know their product is inferior to Australian Football and can see the writing on the wall now that the AFL is taking NSW/ACT seriously when it comes to promotion and marketing.TLPG wrote:There is little chance of Jake going back to his former code.
